TOKYO -- Japanese entertainment company Shochiku is hoping a mix of old and new can help them cash in on the popularity of a superhit comic book series to revive its traditional kabuki theater business.

After more than two years since the rebuilding of its Kabukiza theater in Tokyo's Ginza district, Shochikus group's operating profit is expected to fall 28% on the year to 5.4 billion yen ($43.5 million) in fiscal 2015. That presents a marked contrast to its rivals Toho and Toei, which are forecast to post record operating profits this fiscal year thanks to the success of their movie distribution business.
In the year through February 2014, the rebuilding of the theater helped operating profit of that segment jump to 6.8 billion yen, compared with the 262 million yen it logged in the previous year.
